Featured Artist - Robyn Smaller

In this interview we meet Robyn Smaller, a potter/mixed media artist, whose characterful creations capture attention and bring delight to all (much like the artist herself!)

Robyn, Tell us a little about your creative journey. How did you end up where you are today?

My love of pottery began almost 40 years ago when I attended night classes at Stratford High School.  I became hooked immediately and purchased an LPG Gas fired kiln.

I enjoy making hand-built, quirky animals and people for the garden or home.  I hope my individually crafted pieces bring happiness and a smile to people. I never run out of ideas and opening my kiln is still a thrill!

I lap up the time spent in my studio, a former milkroom in our cowshed, it's my happy place. I love to repurpose treasures I find at Op Shops and beach finds into my creations too. I enjoy experimenting with a variety of clay bodies, glazes, oxides and texturing techniques.

I volunteer at Percy's Place and Eltham Village Gallery and am a member of New Plymouth Potters and Stratford Art Society.

I recently lost my dearest friend, Margaret Foley.  She was my pottery tutor at night school in the 80s.  We travelled to markets all over the North Island together for many years, selling our pottery. She was my mentor and special best friend.  I miss her advice and company but will treasure the happy memories.

You can find a variety of Robyn's artwork at Percy's Place. Here is a small selection:
